Segerstrom Center for the Arts

Segerstrom Center for the Arts (formerly Orange County Performing Arts Center) is one of California’s most distinguished multi-disciplinary arts organizations. It is the artistic home to three resident companies: Pacific Symphony,Philharmonic Society of Orange County and Pacific Chorale. It also presents a broad range of programming each season. This includes international ballet and dance,national tours of top Broadway shows,intimate performances by jazz and cabaret artists,contemporary artists,classical music performed by renowned chamber orchestras and ensembles and family-friendly programming.

Segerstrom Hall is the center’s main facility. It includes the 250-seat Founders Hall as well as the 2,000-seat Renee & Henry Segerstrom concert hall,500-seat Samueli Theater and 56,100 square-foot Julianne & George Argyros Art Plaza. The campus is surrounded by a beautiful sculpture garden,including Isamu Noguchi’s tranquil California Scenario.

I was there for a performance of Hairspray. It was amazing! The seats are a bit far back and the audio isn’t very loud. The performers more than make up for the lack of sound.

TeWinkle Park

There’s plenty to see and do at Tewinkle Park. The 49-acre park features a lake,ballfields,tennis courts,and picnic areas. The park also features an amphitheater,a dog-park and playgrounds.

The park’s ponds are home to ducks and geese. The city encourages visitors to feed the ducks and geese,but asks that they not throw food scraps in the water. The ponds also have a waterfall and fountain.

The park is large and has many activities for the entire family. There is a great playground for kids,an outdoor stage for music and theater performances,a skate park and more. You can also walk and run on paved paths.

The Angels Playground is the park’s main feature. It was built to honor a child from the locality with severe disabilities. The playground features names of donors and charitable organizations. The rest of the park is filled with groves of oak trees,which offer shade and are beautiful to view from any angle.

Fairview Park

Fairview Park has a wide range of activities. It’s known for its pristine natural areas and is great for picnicking,hiking,mountain biking and kite flying. It also has a miniature railroad and model aircraft flying field.

A group of hobbyists referred to as Harbor Soaring Society has flown remote-control aircraft in the area since 1963. Members of the group claim to respect and follow city regulations. Some residents claim that model planes can be disruptive and threaten rare plants and birds.

Costa Mesa,California is examining how to regulate this activity. In January,the city will host more public meetings. Its goal is to present a report to the Council by May.
